Today is the TV launch of the 2017 Christmas advert from Sky Cinema.
This Christmas’s commercial follows the lives of a mother and daughter from 1992 until present day, as they develop a little ritual of always watching the same film together every Christmas, no matter what.
We see their relationship strengthen over time from the wide-eyed wonder of a four-year-old seeing the film for the first time through the years of learning the songs, teenage awkwardness, a gap year and, finally, revealing the grown-up daughter now has a child of her own and a new cycle is about to begin.
The spot showcases how though many things change throughout the years, this shared, intimate moment of mother and daughter coming together to watch their film remains strong.
The commercial was written by our creatives Alicia Job and Jessica Watson and directed by Ben Liam Jones at Strange Love. It was shot on film, better to evoke the feeling of the different years passing by, and the music is an arrangement by Jonathan Goldstein of “Favourite Things” from the original soundtrack.
The ad forms part of Sky Cinema’s Christmas campaign, showcasing Sky Cinema as the home of Christmas this year with a new premiere every day for just £10 per month to Sky customers.
Luke Bradley-Jones, Chief Marketing Officer of Sky UK, said “The Sky Cinema Christmas campaign really highlights the huge role movies can play in bringing people together at Christmas. I always loved sitting down to watch BIG and it’s a tradition I’ve carried on with my own kids. The TV ad captures the essence of what Christmas is all about, and is part of a much broader campaign that we’re sure will appeal to movie fans, both young and old.”
Leon Jaume, Executive Creative Director at WCRS said: “A huge amount of skill and craft has gone into this little gem, but what I love most about it is that it comes from the hearts of Alicia and Jess, who wrote it based on their own Christmas rituals with their mothers”.
