Getting into the advertising industry can be a tough gig.
Before graduating I spent an inordinate amount of time filling out agency application forms with limited success. The interviews I did get ended in disappointment, however the nature of those assessments did at least prove to me that advertising was definitely a place my abstract mind could find a home.
In what other industry could I be asked how I would ‘describe the colour blue to a blind person’ in a candlelit room that was somewhere between a séance and that ‘are you trying to seduce me Mrs. Robinson’ scene from The Graduate? For what other industry would I be willing to work through the night to hand draw the blueprints for a Mosquito fighter-bomber, deliver it the next day in person with my CV, get rejected instantly and still come back for more?
After I graduated, confidence dented but undeterred, I found the WCRS Big Break.
It was immediately clear I was going to like it here.
As a scheme run by the younger members of the agency you can very quickly relate to the rhythm of agency life and the roles you will be taking on. You’ll come to understand the inner workings of an agency, from managing client relationships and driving forward a client brief in account management; to creating powerful strategies grounded in data and consumer insight within planning; to scaling, budgeting and delivering creative concepts in project management.
Prepare to have your ideas interrogated, budgets accounted for and reasoning tested.
I urge you, if you make one placement scheme application this year, make sure it’s this one.
Now in its third year, WCRS’s Big Break Scheme offers talented candidates a unique 3-month placement spanning, account management, planning and project management.
