When we set up the WCRS Big Break scheme two years ago we wanted to create an advertising internship with a difference. Our goal was to establish a fast-track programme that would match our interns with their ideal role in the industry.
As recent graduates ourselves, we knew how daunting it could be to have to make a decision about your future career. Add to that the confusing web of different job titles and roles that advertising seems to produce and it becomes a total minefield.
How could you be sure your chosen role was really the one for you? There’s a limit to how much you can learn from careers fairs and graduate websites – to really be sure, you need to be able to try it out for yourself.
So we wanted to create an internship programme that gave interns hands-on experience across three different roles in advertising.
But we’re not talking about a work experience placement – on the Big Break, interns are fully immersed on a client team, working on live projects with real-world outputs. And they’re fairly paid for their work.
For the three months they’re here, our interns each spend a month in account management, project management and strategy, giving them a holistic overview of the inner workings of a top ad agency. Big Breakers often come in with their hearts set on one department, only to find that another has completely won them over.
This freedom and exposure to three different disciplines gives them a unique perspective on the industry – and makes them incredibly employable.
