The Oceans Biggest Threat

By 2050, the plastic polluting our oceans will outweigh the marine life.

To highlight this terrifying statistic, we teamed up with Sky Ocean Rescue to create The Oceans’ Biggest Threat, a digital out of home campaign that launched to mark World Plastic Bag Free Day.

The Oceans’ Biggest Threat won the commercial category in last year’s Ocean Outdoor digital creative competition. This allowed us to launch this interactive campaign at Westfield London with a domination of Ocean’s large format full motion digital screen in Eat Street.

We encouraged passersby to discover what is the most menacing danger lurking in the oceans by filling the screen with the silhouette of an ominous deep-sea creature, accompanied by the headline, “Discover the oceans’ biggest threat”.

Participants were then invited to use their mobile phones to connect with the screen via its free wifi.

A combination of 3D technology, video and streamed data turned their phones into virtual torches to discover what was really casting the shadow on the screen. The torches then revealed that the biggest threat to our oceans isn’t sharks or sea monsters, it’s single-use plastic.

The campaign was supported on the day by Sky’s Ocean Rescue team giving away plastic-free shopping bags as well as displaying a life-sized whale made from over a quarter of a ton of recovered single-use plastic.
